Family Activities afternoon at The Hub in Larches 22nd October 2024

Tuesday 22nd October 2pm-4:30pm

Family activities at The Hub at St Bernards, Elswick Road, Ashton, Preston, PR2 1NT.

The Harris and UCLan are looking for 2 Harris Volunteers to assist with running some family-friendly activities during October half term at The Hub in Larches. You'd be working alongside 2 UCLan student volunteers and a mixture of Harris and UCLan staff.

The themed activities include:

  • Shapes in art and life: children will learn to bring shapes, patterns, and art to life by building with polydrons.

  • Potted Prehistory: children will make and take home their own playful pottery – inspired by the Stone Age!

  • Themed story times at 2:30 and 3:30.

  • Playtime in the past: children can dress up like a Victorian using flat caps and pinafores

These activities are aimed at 3-9 year olds.

These kinds of sessions will be run multiple times over the next academic year during half terms and holidays at the following venues: Ribbleton Library, The Hub at St Bernards, Ingol Library and St Matthews Mission on Acregate Ln. If you accept this challenge, there could be an opportunity for you to be involved throughout the year!

What's involved?

Volunteer roles are flexible but you should be confident to do a couple of the following:

  • Welcome participants, talk them through what activites are available on the day.

  • Read aloud to a group of children during the story-time sessions.

  • Helping children and families with the specific activities e.g. making pottery with them, showing them how to use the polydrons.

  • Collecting feedback from participants

Training

  • If you accept this challenge, you should be available to attend a training session on Thursday 17th October 1:30-2:30. This training will be run by the UCLan academic who helped design the activities and will be important for making you feel comfortable with facilitating the activities :)

Why get involved?

  • Engage with your local community or a new community!

  • Embrace your inner child and have fun with activities.

  • Get stuck in and be hands on!

  • Spread the word about the Harris - who are we and what do we do?
