Work as a Team

Engaging Volunteers

Attend a familiarisation tour on 18th September and get prepared to help the Harris to engage with local communities, welcome visitors and spread information about the new Harris.

The Harris is seeking out volunteers who are confident, outgoing and good information-retainers to attend a get-to-know the Harris familarisation tour on Thursday18th September. Attending this tour will enable you to sign up to future public-facing volunteering opportunities such as:

  • Community Outreach work - presenting and sharing information and Q&A's about the new Harris to community groups and community centres around Preston.
  • Assisting on the day of the Harris reopening (Sunday 28th September) - being a friendly face for members of the public to approach, ask for guidance, directions or information.
  • Future invigilation/being a helper/being a guide inside the Harris.

Coming to the familiarisation tour will prepare you for accepting one of the above roles – have a think about which role suits you best and we will follow this up with you.

What's involved?

You'll need to be available to attend a building familiarisation tour on Thursday 18th September 12noon-2pm if you're interested in public-facing and engagement volunteering roles. This will be an in-depth building tour to get to know each space in the Harris delivered by Tim Joel (Head of Arts and Culture) and James Arnold (Programmes and Collections Manager), these guys have the best overarching knowledge of the Harris building and are the Harris' Senior Leadership Team.

On this familiarisation tour you will receive:

  • Space Introductions - the key themes/messages/functions of each space
  • Object highlights
  • A brew break
  • the opportunity to ask Tim and James any answers you have about the spaces so that you can feel confident to pass on this information in the future to curious visitors and members of the public
  • A handout to take away and familarise yourself with.

There will be up to 35 spaces available for this building familiarisation tour. We'd like to have you as a team to dip into for the various opportunities listed above.

Millie will be in touch to suss out who is interested in what and will be looking for a smaller group of you to join her in a community outreach team - deliver information sessions and Q&A’s about what people can expect to see and get involved in in the new Harris.

Why get involved?

  • You'll be able to do what you do best - make people feel at ease and have a good old chat with people!
  • Get all the information you might need to answer questions from the public.
  • Meet new people, meet new groups.
